Alcohol Inks – Happy Accidents Abound

Creative art is sometimes controlled and sometimes it is going with the flow to create the unexpected. The abstract often becomes more than what was intended. Alcohol inks are an acid-free, highly-pigmented, and a fast drying medium to be used on non-porous surfaces. Mixing colors can create a vibrant marbled effect and the possibilities can only be limited by what you are willing to try.

My studio is  a secret laboratory. My art is all one big experiment for me. Sometimes the results are controlled, and sometimes they are unexpected. The abstract often becomes more than what was intended; “happy accidents” abound. Ultimately, the process by which I achieved the results is often my most treasured aspect of creating. Thanks to discovering alcohol inks: I am finding new ways to create.

Beginning Calligraphy – Italic

Italic, or Chancery Cursive, is the handwriting of the scribes of the Renaissance, and remains an ever-popular introduction to calligraphy. Italic is a modern, legible alphabet, frequently used for invitations, envelopes, place cards, and other commercial calligraphy, as well as for calligraphic art, such as poetry and prose pieces.

In this beginner class, students will learn basic strokes and how they apply to the Italic form, how to put those strokes together in a sequence that creates the letters, proper letter and word spacing, making a simple background, and be able to put examples in a handmade accordion book. Many samples from various historic calligraphic masters will be shown throughout the class, as well as modern samples from some of the cutting-edge lettering artists out there today. All supplies will be included in this workshop.

“The Zentangle Method is an easy to learn, fun and relaxing way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.”

Zentangles are miniature pieces of unplanned, abstract, black and white art created through a very specific method. They are created from an ensemble of simple, structured patterns called tangles on a 3.5-inch (89 mm) square paper tile. Zentangles are not only exquisitely beautiful, they are fun and relaxing to create.

The process of creating a Zentangle is a form of “artistic meditation” as one becomes completely engrossed in making each pattern, deliberately focusing on “one stroke at a time”®. The creativity options and pattern combinations are boundless. And anyone can do it!

The Zentangle method “increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. The Zentangle method is enjoyed all over this world across a wide range of skills, interests and ages.”

One of the lovely things about Zentangle is that it isn’t supposed to BE anything. Even more, it’s SUPPOSED to NOT be something. Zentangle is simply beautiful patterns playing harmoniously together. Zentangle-inspired art (ZIA) is another story; it can be Something if you want it to be.
